Recycling with Recology
I visited the Recology dry & compost recycling centres in San Francisco and what a fantastic example of a recycling centre it was. At the compost centre they have been running a hugely successful artist in residence scheme since 1990 that gives space to artists to create work from the waste material. Along with that they have a falconer and falcons on site as a natural way to deter seagulls and pigeons from the site. As you can see from the images the main cause of waste at the dry recycling centre is packaging from online shopping. This facility recovers over 600 million pounds of recycling per year. The compost facility generates over 1 billion pounds of compost per year that is used both commercially in vineyards for example & local farms.
